DBU Report Summer 2025

DBU REPORT 32 PATRIOTS CLOSED 2025 SEASON WITH POWER, POISE, AND A REGIONAL RUN The Dallas Baptist University Patriots wrapped up the 2025 baseball season with strength and resolve, finishing their campaign with a memorable appearance at the NCAA Regionals. Throughout the season, the team demonstrated an impressive combination of veteran leadership, explosive offense, and standout pitching, achieving historic milestones and setting a high standard of excellence from start to finish. Along the way, the Patriots captured their second Conference USA regular-season title since joining the league in 2023, further cementing their dominance in the conference. DBU also notched signature wins over nationally ranked opponents, including Oklahoma and TCU, underscoring the program’s place among the elite in college baseball. Central to the Patriots’ success was a high-powered offense led by returning standouts Michael Dattalo, Luke Heefner, Nathan Humphreys, Grant Jay, and Chayton Krauss. DBU’s lineup was propelled by Keaton Grady, who led the team with a .366 batting average. Catcher Grant Jay continued to power the offense, becoming the program’s all-time home run leader during the 2025 season. A defining highlight of the season came when senior outfielder Nate Humphreys reached a historic milestone, belting a home run for the 200th hit of his career. Humphreys became the first Patriot in program history to record 200 career hits, 30 home runs, 40 doubles, and 50 stolen bases—an extraordinary achievement that solidifies his place among DBU’s all-time greats. On the mound, DBU’s pitching staff was equally impressive. Ryan Borberg led Conference USA with nine wins, while James Ellwanger ranked 13th nationally with an electric 13.50 strikeouts per nine innings. Micah Bucknam provided consistency and leadership as the Patriots’ Friday night starter for much of the season, tossing two complete games along the way. The staff capped the regular season in historic fashion, as Mason Peters, Luke Pettitte, and Nick Bonn combined for a no-hitter against Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia—the fourth no-hitter in DBU’s Division I era. The Patriots entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional, marking their 11th consecutive postseason appearance. DBU joins Florida, LSU, Oklahoma State, and Vanderbilt as the only five teams in the nation to reach the NCAA Regionals each of the last 11 years. The Patriots opened regional play with a 6–2 victory over Rhode Island, propelled by early home runs from Chayton Krauss and Keaton Grady, and a strong start from Ryan Borberg. However, DBU faced a setback in the winner’s bracket, falling 12–0 to top-seeded LSU. In an elimination game against Little Rock, the Patriots battled but ultimately concluded their season with an 8–6 loss, finishing with a 41–18 record. Throughout the season, DBU showcased a roster blending seasoned leadership with emerging talent, embodying the spirit, determination, and excellence that define DBU Baseball. Their 2025 campaign further solidified the Patriots’ status as one of the nation’s premier baseball programs.
