36 LIGHTS, SINGING, DANCING: DBU STUDENTS TAKE TO THE STAGE FOR SPRING SING With bright lights, energetic music, and brand-new productions, Dallas Baptist University’s annual Spring Sing continues to highlight our students’ incredible talents. Beginning in 2005, this tradition encourages groups to combine their creativity, singing, acting, and choreography into one performance for competition. This year, ten participating groups showcased their unique productions at a matinee preliminary competition, followed by a final competition, where the top five competed for an overall winner. Judges were brought in, including faculty, staff, and Greek Life alumni to help choose who would make it to the finals, and who would win the whole competition. Heading into Spring Sing weekend, the groups continued to perfect their productions. “What many people don’t see, are the months of writing, meeting, dreaming, rehearsing, and planning such a spectacular show,” shares Director of Student Life, Wayne Briggs. All these late-night meetings lead up to one final all-night rehearsal on Friday night, with groups running their shows full-out in preparation for the next day. As they practiced with lights, props, and in full costume, the groups created lasting memories with one another as they stayed up long through the night. Stepping onto the competition stage on Saturday, the groups performed for over 1,300 guests. Each group gave their all, with notable performances by Pi Theta Tau in their Pirate-themed production and one of Psi Omega Pi’s leads, John Estes, giving a powerful and moving vocal performance in both shows. Moving on to the finals, based on judges’ votes, were Rho Lambda Chi, Zeta Chi, Psi Omega Phi, Sigma Chi Eta, and Delta Theta. For the second year in a row, Rho Lambda Chi took home the first-place trophy with their unique and comedic space-themed musical about Pluto being demoted to a dwarf planet. Sigma Chi Eta earned second place as they charmed fans with their take on The Truman Show, with their bright colors and musical theatre-inspired style. Zeta Chi claimed third place with their action-packed production featuring high stakes and high-energy dance numbers. Transporting the audience to small-town USA, Chi Theta Alpha’s performance was a reminder of the importance of the journey and the friendships made along the way. Combining ideas from Mary Poppins and Peter Pan, Delta Theta brought high-energy acting, singing, and dancing to the stage. THE DBU REPORT: SPRING SING
